CREATE YOUR OWN BOOKS FOR FUN AND PROFIT! HERE'S HOW YOU DO IT!
Part Three: Covering Your Book
15. Test fit the cover your prepared in step 8. If you measured properly and scored accurately, the cover will fit neatly on the book block. If it doesn't fit neatly, prepare a new cover. A badly fitted cover will make your book look cheap.
16. When everything fits okay, put a thin coat of glue on the spine part of the cover and on the spine of the book block. Lay the cover on a smooth, flat surface and carefully lower the book block spine so it aligns with the cover. Make sure that you have the cover and the book block oriented properly; it is easy to get the book cover on upside down. (We've done it.) Fold both covers over the book block, squeeze everything tightly together, and press it all until the glue dries.
17. Protect the cover of your book by coating it with lacquer, varnish, or a plastic library film. We generally don't use lacquer or varnish. They are hard to find and apply, though some kinds of hair spray can be used. We prefer library film; it is a thin plastic with adhesive on one side covered with a wax paper backing. Cut a piece of library film big enough to cover the book, remove the backing paper and lay the film on a flat surface with the adhesive up. Carefully lay the book on the film and roll it over the spine so the film covers front and back covers. Smooth the film down with a bone folder, bottom of a spoon or similar item. Then trim the film even with the cover all around.
Now you have a book!
